Computop Supports Wero Acquirers with Payment Processing
Computop, a leading German payment service provider renowned for facilitating international payment methods for major retailers, is entering a new business segment: payment processing for acquirers.
This strategic move supports the launch of the European Wero Wallet, developed by the European Payment Initiative (EPI).
Supporting Wero Payments
EPI’s Wero Wallet relies on acquiring banks to facilitate payment acceptance. These banks handle merchant verification, transaction processing, and customer payment settlements on behalf of merchants—a process commonly used for credit card payments, known as acquiring processing. To accept Wero payments, banks must implement new interfaces and processes.
With over 25 years of expertise in payment processing, Computop is poised to support acquiring banks in adopting Wero payments. Its services include onboarding, token generation and exchange, authorization and capture processing, and detailed reporting. Computop’s modular system allows acquirers to perform select steps in-house, leaving clearing as the primary task for regulated institutions.
Initial Partnerships and Rollout
Computop’s services will initially support a major French bank and a German acquirer, with the first Wero transactions expected in Q2 2025, aligning with EPI’s timeline for the e-commerce launch of Wero. Merchants can connect to Wero via Computop Paygate, enabling seamless integration of the payment method into their online stores as acquirer connections become available.
Ralf Gladis, CEO of Computop, commented: “Computop remains committed to offering merchants a wide range of acquiring options. By facilitating Wero-processing for acquirers, we are enabling merchant banks to adopt the new European payment method swiftly, empowering merchants and PSPs alike.”
This development positions Computop as a key player in the evolving European payment landscape, supporting innovation and accessibility for businesses across the region.
