Vipps MobilePay has launched its groundbreaking “tap with Vipps” feature in Norway, becoming the first company to offer an alternative to Apple Pay on iPhone. Starting today, Vipps users can tap their phones to pay at stores, marking a major milestone in the global payment landscape.

“This is the culmination of years of effort to compete on equal terms with Apple. It’s surreal to finally introduce our own solution,” said Rune Garborg, CEO of Vipps MobilePay.

A Landmark EU Agreement

The launch follows the July agreement between the EU and Apple, which granted third-party payment apps access to the iPhone. With this move, iPhone users can now choose their preferred payment solution for the first time. Android users can also access the tap-to-pay functionality via Vipps.

A Unified Payment App

Vipps now supports payments for virtually every need: in-store transactions, online purchases, money transfers, charitable donations, and more. This all-in-one approach enhances convenience for users.

“We’re thrilled to offer a seamless payment experience, eliminating the need for multiple apps or cards,” added Garborg. “While competition is fierce, we’re committed to expanding our offering with features like support for international cards and additional banking partners.”

Expansion Plans

Initially available to customers of SpareBank 1, DNB, and over 40 local banks, Vipps MobilePay aims to onboard more banks soon. The service will support Visa and Mastercard cards by summer 2025, enabling worldwide tap-to-pay functionality.

Vipps MobilePay also plans to bring its “tap and go” solution to Denmark, Finland, and Sweden in 2025.

By leveraging Norway’s national payment system, BankAxept, and partnerships with BankAxept and Thales, Vipps MobilePay has set the stage for robust competition against global giants.

“This is just the beginning of an exciting battle with one of the world’s most iconic brands,” Garborg concluded.
