The U.K. Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has initiated a “Phase 1” investigation into Amazon’s $4 billion investment in U.S.-based AI firm Anthropic. The investigation will determine whether the partnership, which involves making Anthropic’s AI models available on Amazon’s Bedrock platform, could harm competition in the U.K.

Amazon, which completed the investment earlier this year, expressed disappointment with the CMA’s decision to proceed with the probe, stating that the collaboration is intended to expand choice and competition in the AI industry. The CMA now has 40 working days to decide whether to escalate the investigation to a more detailed “Phase 2” review.

Anthropic also responded, emphasizing its independence and the lack of Amazon’s influence on its governance or decision-making. The CMA’s investigation reflects growing regulatory scrutiny of major tech companies’ investments in the rapidly advancing AI sector.
