Dutch fintech leader Mollie is reportedly in the final stages of acquiring UK-based bank payment provider GoCardless, in a deal expected to be finalized as early as September 2025.

The acquisition would mark one of the most significant consolidations in Europe’s payments sector this year. GoCardless, a specialist in direct bank payment solutions, has attracted strong interest from potential buyers throughout 2025, including Sweden’s Trustly. Talks with Trustly ended earlier this year, paving the way for Mollie to advance negotiations.

The two companies share leadership ties—Mollie’s CEO, Koen Köppen, has served as an independent director on GoCardless’s board since 2022, following the company’s $312 million Series G funding round led by Permira that valued GoCardless at $2.1 billion.

In FY 2024, GoCardless reported a 38% increase in revenue to £126.8 million and a 28% rise in transaction volume to £39.6 billion, while cutting net losses by 55%. Cost efficiencies, including up to 20% staff reductions and offshoring, contributed to improved profitability metrics.

Mollie, one of Europe’s fastest-growing payment service providers, recorded €214 million in revenue in 2024, up 28% from the previous year, with growth fueled by a product-led strategy and international expansion. The potential acquisition would create a payments powerhouse, combining GoCardless’s expertise in direct bank payments with Mollie’s strong merchant platform for online and e-commerce transactions, accelerating Mollie’s ambition to offer an end-to-end payment ecosystem for European and global merchants.

This transaction reflects a broader trend in fintech consolidation, with 62 acquisitions in the first half of 2025, up from 57 during the same period in 2024.
