Mastercard to Acquire Swedish Startup Minna Technologies
Mastercard announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Minna Technologies, a Swedish startup specializing in subscription management software. This acquisition aims to address a growing consumer challenge—managing multiple subscriptions such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. With global subscription numbers expected to rise from 6.8 billion to 9.3 billion by 2028, according to Juniper Research, Mastercard sees this move as a way to simplify subscription management for users, offering them a unified view of all their subscriptions through their banking apps or a central hub.
Minna Technologies, based in Gothenburg, enables consumers to manage their subscriptions regardless of the payment method used. The company already collaborates with major financial institutions, including Mastercard and its competitor, Visa. Mastercard stated that integrating Minna’s technology will enhance the tools available to help streamline the merchant-consumer relationship and prevent disruption in the subscription process.
The acquisition is part of Mastercard’s broader strategy to expand beyond traditional credit and debit card services into new areas like cybersecurity, fraud prevention, and digital payments. While the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, the transaction is pending regulatory approval.
